IDEALIZED RIVER PLUME STUDIES

Idealized process-oriented river plume studies with the HYCOM

DESCRIPTION:
A BOX-like domain was designed to conduct process-oriented river plume experiments. It is a mid-latitude, f-plane ( f = 10-4 s-1) rectangular basin that is approximately 200 km long in the across-shore direction and 500 long in the along-shore direction. A 25km wide coast is placed in the west side of the basin and the offshore boundaries are open. A simplified estuary is located at the coast. Short black solid line denotes where river discharge is imposed. Dashed lines represent the location of vertical sections.

RESOLUTION:
2.5 km x 2.5 km, 16 vertical levels (z-levels with a flat bottom basin, sigma levels with a sloping bottom basin).

OUTER MODELS:
No nesting

DATA ASSIMILATION:
No data assimilation

FORCING:
River discharge imposed at the head of the estuary

APPLICATIONS: (sub-pages)
Dynamics of river plumes
Sensitivity tests and model parameterization
Delta river plumes
